The purpose of the study is to show the importance of the activities of the famous Ukrainian historian and educator Mykola Kovalskyi (1929-2006) in establishing the idea of the Ostroh University Center and in its practical implementation. The research methodology is based on the methods of intellectual history, historiographical analysis and synthesis. For the first time, the issue of the role of M. Kovalskyi in the creation of the leading modern Ukrainian higher education institution – the National University of Ostroh Academy is systematically covered. It is substantiated that the administrative and organizational activity, scientific creativity and educational practices of the professor were of great importance for the establishment of the idea of the Ostroh University Center and in its practical implementation. M. Kovalskyi was and remains the greatest scientist who worked/works at the Ostroh Academy. Without him, the Ostroh university idea would not have such a developed component of respect for true science, which is characteristic of it today. The professor's contribution to the implementation of practical things, without which there could be no question of its rapid growth, was significant – the establishment of a teaching staff, the initiation of intensive and high-quality scientific work, the definition of forms and methods of higher education, in general, the formation of intellectual and methodical potential for future progress.
