Abstract

Based on the study of the sentence as a multi-aspect syntactic unit, the article characterizes the structural-semantic features of parcellated constructions in U. Samchuk’s novel «Volyn». These constructions function as independent syntactic-intonational structures, yet they do not lose their semantic and structural connection with the basic sentence unit. The author of the article comments on the stylistic effect of these constructions as a result of the collision between the semantics of the syntactic form and the lexical semantics that fills it, as a result of which the sentence unit in artistic speech most fully realizes its multi-aspect nature, associated with its stylistic dominants – imagery and expressiveness. These elements help the author of the artistic text present their worldview and ideological-artistic intent.
At the syntactic level, parcellated constructions in the novel «Volyn» are an effective technique for creating expression, while at the communicative level, these sentence units are a form of expressing complex speech acts and a powerful means of topical segmentation of the utterance. Parcellation is a stylistically motivated device in U. Samchuk’s linguistic creativity, as it essentially complements, clarifies, and communicatively intensifies the meaning of basic structures, helps to depict spontaneous colloquial remarks of characters, accurately reproduces their psycho-emotional state, and enhances the informativeness of a large prose text, often creating a technique of syntactic gradation. As a distinctive feature of U. Samchuk’s idiolect, formed by both subjective and objective (national) factors, parcellated constructions deeply root in the novel «Volyn», such mental traits of the Ukrainian ethnicity as religiosity, attachment to the land, which for Ukrainians always had a sacred meaning and was not only a condition for material existence but also an internal necessity.
