DEMOGRAPHIC AGING OF THE POPULATION: CONSEQUENCES AND PROSPECTS FOR UKRAINE

Abstract

The purpose of the work is to specify the problems associated with the spread of the population demographic aging trend and determine the main directions for reforming these negative consequences for the future for the development of the social and economic sphere of Ukraine. The urgency of the problem of population aging for Ukraine is substantiated. It is established that Ukraine occupies the 45th place in the level of population aging among 229 countries of the world with an average age of more than 40 years. The dynamics of the share of people in old age in the general population of Ukraine during the period of its independence has been analyzed – the proportion of people aged 60 and over in the total population of the country increased from 18.3% in 1990 to 22.5% in 2017. The dynamics of the level of the pension burden on the able-bodied population of Ukraine – in 1990 there were 180 elderly people aged 65 and older per 1000 people of working age, in 2017 this figure exceeded 236 people. The negative consequences of the spread of the aging trends of the population for the Ukrainian economy have been established, each of which leads to a reduction in the quality of life of the population regardless of age. The internal reserves of economic growth and recovery of the Ukrainian economy are determined by involving elderly people in social production. The main areas for attracting people of age to cooperation should be education, tourist-recreational and educational activities.
