The article examines the psycholinguistic aspect of expressiveness in the speech of the characters of George R. R. Martin's novel "Game of Thrones" and the ways of its reproduction in the Ukrainian translation by Natalia Tysovska. The research is based on the study of expressive speech of the key characters of the novel. From the standpoint of psycholinguistic analysis, it is noted that different ethnic groups, regardless of language, have the same logic of presentation, thought forms and mental processes typical of human nature in general, whereas the psycholinguistic tools of both languages can differ significantly. These differences involve: a fixed type of thinking characteristic of the English language due to the fixed order of words in a sentence and a flexible type of thinking for the Ukrainian language, which has a free word order; a difference in the connotative coloring of expressive vocabulary; the tendency of the English language to analyticity and contextual conditioning, and the synthetic nature of the Ukrainian language, which allows for expressiveness to be conveyed without additional context. The study reveals dominant lexical, stylistic and pragmatic expressive means the characters of the novel employ in their speech: sarcasm and mock politeness, ironic inversion and rhetorical pressure, self-irony and restrained invective, categorical modal vocabulary and rhetorical question. In the course of the translation analysis, the reasearch states the pragmatic equivalence between the expressive means in source language and target language due to the use of functional equivalent, modulation and stylistic compensation, however, in some cases, partial neutralization or compensation is recorded. It is noted that the main challenges of translation expressive speech lie in selecting the appropriate level of expressiveness in translation, preserving the character's personal qualities, and avoiding either excessive neutralization or, conversely, excessive expressiveness. It is concluded that the effectiveness of translating expressive language of the characters depends on the translator's ability to choose the optimal combination of transformations, which ensures a balance between preserving the cultural specificity of the original and creating a text that is accessible and appealing to the Ukrainian audience.
