CONCEPTUAL DOMINANTS IN THE TRANSLATION STUDIES CONCEPTOSPHERE OF YELYZAVETA STARYNKEVYCH

Abstract

As part of a broader study on the foundational terminological elements of the Ukrainian translation studies school, this article is devoted to one of its leading yet, due to historical reasons, insufficiently researched personalities, Yelyzaveta Ivanivna Starynkevych. The scholar's conceptual sphere encompasses such notions and terminological units as "accuracy," "orientation towards accuracy," "artistic value," "parody," "translatability," "untranslatability," "adequacy," and others. Her authorial system of notions formulates a coherent and consistent translation studies conception that complemented and strengthened the terminological system and metalanguage of the Ukrainian translation studies school. The translation studies conception of Yelyzaveta Ivanivna Starynkevych systematically linked the linguistic and artistic components of translation, establishing their inseparability: without accurate rendering of linguistic characteristics, the scholar argued, artistic reproduction of the original is impossible. At the same time, the scholar combined linguistic and literary approaches, called for the reproduction of the author's dominant features, and urged translators to avoid "translator's language."It is particularly significant that Yelyzaveta Starynkevych formulated and defended her ideas under conditions of mounting ideological pressure, which assigns her theoretical positions not only a scholarly but also a civic dimension. Yelyzaveta Starynkevych anticipated many ideas, yet much of her work remained "unheard" as a consequence of historical circumstances. Returning to her legacy is not only a scholarly necessity but also an act of cultural justice towards a generation of Ukrainian intellectuals whose work was deliberately destroyed by the Soviet system.
