LEXICAL-SEMANTIC TRANSFORMATIONS IN LEGAL TRANSLATION: FEATURES OF THE APPLICATION OF TRANSLATION STRATEGIES
Keywords:
legal translation, lexical-semantic transformations, equivalence, terminology, concretization, modulation, generalization, transcription, transliterationAbstract
The article examines the peculiarities of the use of lexical-semantic transformations in legal discourse. The relevance of the topic is due to the insufficient study of the use of translation techniques in the translation of legal texts. Additionally, scientists are increasingly interested in practical applications, in addition to the study of theoretical approaches.
Theoretical approaches to the definition of translation transformations and their classifications are considered; the role of lexical-semantic changes in the system of translation techniques is analyzed.
Legal translation requires accurate reproduction of language units, so one of the most difficult aspects of translating legal texts is the conversion of professional terminology and specialized vocabulary. Terms and other specialized vocabulary can be reproduced using lexical and semantic transformations.
The article analyzes the main types of lexical-semantic transformations used for the translation of legal texts, in particular concretization, generalization, modulation, semantic development, antonymic translation, and compensation. The use of lexical-semantic transformations is a critical factor in achieving translation equivalence, preserving the communicative function of the text, and avoiding literal translation, as has been demonstrated.
The purpose and tasks of the scientific article led to the use of several linguistic research methods: inductive and deductive methods; method of linguistic description; comparative method, and method of translation analysis. The obtained results can be used in further linguistic research, in particular in teaching English, writing textbooks, and creating corpora for automated translation analysis tools.
