The study deals with the problem of classifying terminology in the field of software development in the English and Ukrainian languages. The relevance of terminology classification as a foundation for terminological and cognitive studies is substantiated, and the challenges of systematizing the terminology of this rapidly developing field are outlined. The theoretical principles of thematic and lexical-semantic classification of terms, as well as the principles of contrastive analysis in terminology studies, are defined.
The research material consists of corpus data from the Ukrainian-language corpus “Grac v.19a”, the English-language “iWeb corpus”, and a self-compiled bilingual corpus of professional correspondence in the field of software development. Based on the analysis of corpus data, a thematic classification of software development terminology is proposed, including the following groups: Programming, Software Infrastructure, Development Process, Testing, Documentation, Team, Interface, Artificial Intelligence, Data and Databases, Security, and Software. Most thematic groups have a multi-level hierarchical structure with corresponding subgroups.
Within the framework of contrastive analysis, the study examines the origins of terms, their structure, adaptation strategies, and Ukrainian-language equivalents. The analysis shows that Ukrainian terminology in the field of the software development combines general scientific terms, specialized vocabulary, loanwords, and calques. The thematic group related to artificial intelligence was identified as the most dynamic, as it is actively expanding with new lexical units. The proposed classification may serve as a basis for further frame modeling of the terminology system in the field of software development.
