Abstract

The article presents a comparative analysis of English and Ukrainian phraseological units with somatic, colourative, and zoonymic components, which represent the emotions of joy and anger, in order to reveal their semantic similarities, culturally specific peculiarities, and differences. The first group consists of phraseological units belonging to the semantic field of «joy, satisfaction, happiness»; the second group includes phraseological units denoting «anger, rage, irritation». The selection of these three components within phraseological units provides a broader and more comprehensive understanding of the emotional linguistic worldview of the speakers. The research material comprises a corpus of English and Ukrainian phraseological units selected from various lexicographical sources.
Phraseological units with somatic and colourative components often reflect the physiological manifestations of emotions, which form a common basis for metaphorization. Colourative components provide additional expressiveness and reflect cultural associations between colours and emotions. Zoonymic phraseological units convey emotional states through the behaviour or characteristics of animals, demonstrating culturally specific figurative models.
The comparative analysis reveals that both English and Ukrainian phraseology, combining universal cognitive mechanisms of metaphorization and culturally specific features, offer a wide range of expressive means for conveying emotions. Ukrainian phraseological units stand out for their greater expressiveness and variability of components, while English phraseological units are characterized by more established images.
