Abstract

The article examines the peculiarities of rendering proper names in the Ukrainian translation of ‘Other Voices, Other Rooms’ by Truman Capote. The study analyzes theoretical approaches to the classification of onyms in contemporary linguistics and translation studies, outlining the main functions of proper names in literary discourse and their role in shaping the author’s conceptual framework. Particular attention is paid to the functional and stylistic features of anthroponyms and toponyms, which contribute to the construction of the novel’s artistic space, the formation of psychological and sociocultural oppositions, and the actualization of the motifs of loneliness, alienation, and inner quest.
The research demonstrates that proper names in the novel perform nominative as well as semantic, characterological, and intertextual functions. A quantitative analysis of the novel’s onymic space reveals the predominance of anthroponyms and toponyms. The article also investigates the principal methods of translating proper names in the Ukrainian translation. It has been established that transcription, transliteration, and calquing are the most frequently used translation techniques. The choice of a particular translation strategy depends on the structure of the onym, its cultural markedness, the existence of established equivalents in the target language, and the necessity to preserve the intertextual potential of the proper name. The study proves that the adequate rendering of proper names is an important factor in preserving the artistic integrity of the literary work and conveying the author’s intention in translation.
