Abstract

This article analyzes the artistic specificities of outer space representation in the novel “Project Hail Mary” (2021) by the popular American writer Andy Weir, a proponent of optimistic science fiction who emphasizes human solidarity in the face of global threats. The relevance of this study is grounded in the contemporary “space renaissance” within science and culture, reflected in the revival of the “hard science fiction” genre. The article examines how Andy Weir transforms traditional genre models, such as the cosmic “Robinsonade,” techno-thriller, and xeno-fiction – through the lens of scientific realism, incorporating elements of detective fiction, planetary romance, and the “bromance.” Particular attention is paid to the conceptualization of space, treated not as a static backdrop but as an active narrative participant. The author explores the opposition between the “micro-space” of the isolated spacecraft and the “macro-space” of the deep universe, where physical parameters such as gravity, vacuum, and pressure serve as the primary drivers of the plot. The study further analyzes the writer’s “geographical imagination” in creating an ecosystem for the first contact between the human Ryland Grace and the Eridian Rocky. The differences in the characters' sensory perceptions (visual vs. acoustic) are highlighted, underscoring the complexity of interplanetary communication. It is argued that space in Weir's work is a mathematically calculated system that dictates an ethics of solidarity in the Anthropocene epoch. The symbolism of the title “Project Hail Mary” is revealed as a metaphor for a “desperation pass” and the sacrifice required to save civilization. The article concludes that physical space in the novel is transformed from a hostile environment into a platform for constructive dialogue and interplanetary friendship, affirming a belief in the triumph of intellect over chaos.
