Abstract

The article examines the features of the appearance, functioning and further development of the anthropological component in French travel literature. The connection between anthropology and travel literature precisely in the French literary tradition requires more detailed study, given the constant change in the cultural situation in the world. The literature of travel, as a special genre on the intersection of science and art, allows to trace the formation of the French anthropological school and its connection with literary practice over the centuries. The concept of “character,” which originates from the French anthropological tradition, is transformed in art into the concept of "portrait" and acquires specific features in travel literature. “Travelling” in characters has become an integral, sometimes indispensable part of French travel literature from the Middle Ages to the XX century.
