The article describes the problem of the interpretation of Japanese surrealism and modernism in the works of Nishiwaki Junzaburō. Examples of the formation of a surrealistic language and the European infl uence on versifi cation in the works of Nishiwaki were described. Also, traditional poetic patterns were compared with surrealism and the concept of the over-reality in the poetic language of Nishiwaki In the focus of the research is the surrealism of Nisiwaki. The nature of the problem solved by present study is related to the interpretation of «pure poetry» of Nishiwaki and the determination of the concept of “surrealism” in the context of Japanese poetry and language. We followed, as the concept つまらなさ («tsumaranasa» – boredom, banality) leads Nisiwaki to the technique of the destruction of traditional patterns of signifi cation in poetic language and to the creation of language chimaeras that appear to be stuck in a fold between different languages and
cultural codes. Thus, we partially solved the problem of the defi nition of Japanese surrealism and showed that the realism over which the new poetry is raised is the reality of the codifi ed language. Surrealism, accordingly, is creativity in the space of a completely free semiotic system.
