Abstract

Within the framework of the dentistry discourse that refl ects the typical models of professional interaction and communication we can observe intricate intersection of particular cognitive programs and behaviour patterns of participants – scientists, dental doctors of different subfi elds, heads of institutional settings and their units, patients and their representatives. All these vectors of intra-professional and dentist-patient communication contribute to the extesion of the scope of the subject area and the topics of the dentistry discourse, to the integration and cross-section of various branches of knowledge and practices that from the standpoint of the study of discourse, is defi ned as interdiscoursivity. The purpose of the study presented was to bring out the genre and stylistic parameters refl ecting elements of other discourses in the English document communication within the fi eld of dentistry. 2 groups of documents typical for dental practice in the USA, namely, Clinical records and Consultation and Referral reports served as research materials. The texts studied have been fount out not to be only informative documents, clinical by its main content and essence, since the whole complex of linguistic and pragmatic means is aimed at ensuring the full information transfer to the recipient, fi rst of all, to a competent colleague; these documents also serve as objects of legal regulation and argumentation that is confi rmed by the presence of the linguistic and stylistic elements characteristic of legal discourse. These medical forms also refl ect the system of principles of law, legal communication, inherent in a particular society.
