Abstract

The article deals with the phenomenon of wordplay and specificity of its translation. One of the main directions of the research article in question is a comprehensive translation analysis of the wordplay in the media texts such as sitcoms. Different approaches to the definition of the wordplay as well as mechanisms of its formation with the help of different linguistic means are analyzed. The article differentiates such notions as «pun», «wordplay» and «language game». According to the contemporary approaches to the study and classification of this phenomenon, the authors consider wordplay based on phonological and graphological structure, lexical structure (polysemy), lexical structure (idiom), morphological structure and syntactic structure. The presented linguistic categorization of wordplay underlies the classification of the demonstrated translation of the wordplay.
The article deals with the translation of the wordplay in light of pragmatic orientation of the text. The Delabastita’s methods of translation are considered in the article being also applied in the course of the translation analysis of the dubbing of the sitcoms «Friends» and «Brooklyn 9-9». Current research validates that translation depends largely on the abilities and skills of a translator to correctly interpret the source message containing the wordplay prior to translate it into the target language. The authors emphasize that the wordplay translation is a real challenge in media texts of different genres thus opening further perspectives for the research in this field.
