Abstract

The article describes organizational and methodological approaches to teaching independent reading of the authentic English-language press of students of technical universities. A number of studies of national and foreign scientists as for the use of the mass media for the independent consumption and its influence on students during the last period were analyzed in detail. Advantages of using of authentic English newspapers are listed, as well as difficulties in understanding of an authentic newspaper text are given to be taken into account by a teacher during the choice of materials for independent reading. The notion of independent reading as the basis of communicative and intellectual needs is defined, the importance of the motivated basis of independent reading is stressed and its types are stated. In order to succeed in teaching its general model as a complete system and its components are proposed, also the place of a teacher as a positive motivator for students in the process of independent reading is distinguished. Main factors contributing successful use of newspaper text with the suggested set of exercises aimed at forming independent reading skills of students is given. The article reveals the ways of implementing student training for independent reading through the English press based on organization, consistency and student’s interests.
