Abstract

The development of the terminological system of a certain field of science is closely related to the changes that the language undergoes during the development process, as well as to the peculiarities of vocabulary functioning. The purpose of the research is to determine the semantic-functional specificity of medical terms in the speech of a meteorologist on Facebook social network. The objectives of the research are: to document medical terminology and group it according to semantic criteria; to characterize the functional specificity of medical terminology in professional speech. The posts of N. Didenko, a well-known Ukrainian media forecaster, served as the source base of the research. The factual basis of the study is medical vocabulary in online discourse. The following methods were used in the research process: analysis and synthesis – for theoretical generalizations and systematization of the presentation, content analysis – to identify models of communication in professional speech, descriptive method – to characterize the features of medical vocabulary, component analysis – to clarify the semantics of the terms under study, contextual-interpretive method – to clarify the functioning specifics and contextual dynamics of terminological vocabulary. According to the documented material, six lexical and semantic groups of the medical sphere were identified: vocabulary denoting the human condition, human organs and systems, diseases and disease states, medicines and medical products, patients and individuals by profession. For the most part, N. Didenko’s posts use medical terms in their literal sense. In the relevant context, they are reinterpreted and used in a figurative or phraseological sense. Contextual transformations of medical vocabulary depend on the author’s communicative intention, the need to convey information in a lively, emotional and humorous way and are also conditioned by the verbal environment.
