Abstract

The attention of our research is focused on theoretical and practical aspects of learning English by Ukrainian military personnel in the conditions of war. The article analyses the literature on the topic. The importance of learning and using English for the professional needs of military personnel is indicated. The peculiarities of learning English are investigated. The main difficulties associated with teaching English professional vocabulary are highlighted. An analysis of educational content is carried out: textbooks, manuals, websites, applications. A dictionary of basic professional terms is provided. The main situations of using English are outlined. The selection of basic professional vocabulary is made according to the following categories: military organisation, weapons, tactics, strategy, everyday life. In our research, we come to certain conclusions that there are peculiarities of learning English professional vocabulary of military personnel. First, the foreign professional vocabulary of military personnel is specific and difficult for a non-specialist to understand. Secondly, it is constantly changing, as military equipment and tactics are constantly being improved. A big obstacle to learning a foreign language is that military personnel have limited time and resources for learning, and they need to combine learning with their service, combat duties and tasks.
