HOW TO READ JAMES JOYCE'S NOVEL "ULYSSES": METHODOLOGICAL GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS OF ENGLISH PHILOLOGY

Abstract

Objective. This article reveals the key approaches to reading and understanding the postmodern novel Ulysses by J. Joyce, and show in a fragment of the work how they help the reader discover the subtext, to combine content, to receive aesthetic pleasure from the independently constructed integrity of the text.
Materials and Methods. The article uses fragments from chapters 2 and 11 of the novel “Ulysses” by J. Joyce. Selected fragments of the text show the importance of remembering artistic details, recognizing them through large gaps in text, to combine “stream of consciousness” associations into a single meaning. The scientific methods of research are receptive aesthetics and phenomenological criticism. Receptive aesthetics asserts the reader's rights to create "their own text". Phenomenological criticism studies the phenomenon of the reader in general, comprehending the problems of reading that are not realized by the recipient.
Results. Scientific methods helped analyze the main errors in reading a postmodern text. They could completely damage the reading of the iconic novel of the 20th century. The novel could have fallen out – partially or completely – of the education of an English philology student. To ensure that reading the work brings maximum benefit to students and individuals who are independently mastering J. Joyce's "Ulysses", specific recommendations are provided: set a reading tempo appropriate to the imagination and understanding of the text, not to “condense meaning”, to process hypertext, remember artistic details, be flexible to associatively change topics in the “stream of consciousness”, to take into account the unformed “forethought” in the “stream of consciousness”, integrate content and combine it with artistic form, compare the text in the original language with the Ukrainian translation, to develop cognitive abilities in general.
Conclusions. The stylistic structure of the work encompasses the entire literary heritage of humanity: epic, lyrical and dramatic genres, stylistic diversity, art techniques and media, unconventional syntax. Future research on this topic should detail the proposed approaches and develop new ones.
