The article is devoted to a contrastive analysis of how the Ukrainian lexeme РІШЕННЯ and its English equivalent DECISION function in syntagmatic relations. The aim of the study was not only to identify whether there are common and distinctive features in their compatibility with other parts of speech, but also to analyse how these lexemes are used in different linguistic contexts in Ukrainian, British and American English. This approach allows us to identify nuances that are important for translation and effective language learning.
This article analyses in detail the syntagmatic relations of the words РІШЕННЯ and DECISION based on data from large language corpora. For Ukrainian, the Ukrainian Web 2022 corpus was used, and for English, COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English) and BNC (British National Corpus). This made it possible to cover significant amounts of textual material, which ensures high reliability of the results. The main attention was paid to the frequency and typology of the combinability of the lexemes РІШЕННЯ and DECISION with adjectives, verbs and nouns. This allowed to identify the most common and characteristic patterns of their use.
The results of the analysis clearly show that both lexemes demonstrate a high degree of compatibility with different parts of speech. This emphasises their fundamental role in the process of forming semantic constructions and performing communicative acts. At the same time, distinct differences in the frequency and stylistic pReferences of specific word combinations have been identified. These differences are explained not only by the grammatical and lexical features of the respective languages, but also by the influence of cultural and linguistic traditions. The findings have considerable theoretical and applied importance as they contribute to a deeper understanding of lexical semantics and are a valuable contribution to the development of translation theory and foreign language teaching methods.
Future research may focus on expanding the linguistic data, incorporating additional languages and corpora, and exploring the cultural influences on syntagmatic relations in greater depth.
