CALQUING AS A METHOD OF LEXICAL TRANSFORMATION WHEN TRANSLATING MEDICAL TERMS FROM TURKISH TO UKRAINIAN

Abstract

This article explores calquing as a method of lexical transformation in the translation of medical terms from Turkish into Ukrainian. The primary aim of the study is to identify the specific features and patterns of calque usage in the process of translating specialized medical vocabulary and to assess its impact on the accuracy and quality of the translation. Particular attention is paid to interlingual interference and the challenge of preserving semantic precision in the adaptation of terms within medical discourse.
The methodological basis of the research includes comparative and analytical approaches, componential analysis of terminological units, and contextual analysis of translated excerpts. A corpus of authentic Turkish medical texts and their Ukrainian translations was examined, allowing for the identification of common calquing patterns and their classification according to structural and semantic characteristics.
The findings reveal that calquing is a frequent translation technique that helps preserve terminological accuracy. However, in certain contexts, it may result in the creation of non-functional or unclear lexical items in the target language. The practical significance of the study lies in its applicability to translator training and the development of bilingual medical glossaries. Future research could include a comparative analysis of calquing and other types of lexical transformations in medical translation, as well as an exploration of how language policy influences terminology formation.
