Abstract

The article looks into the notion of newspeak, its features and functions in Orwell’s concept and attempts to trace the determined newspeak properties in the modern discourse. Newspeak manipulative mechanisms have been found in media, political and advertising discourse as realized in euphemisms, clichéd phrases, desemantised vocabulary, weasel words, abbreviations, and political correctness.
