Abstract

The article focuses on the study of the graphic means used to reproduce the Korean speech sounds while discussing the general problem of the Phonographic writing system formation and functioning. The main objectives of the research are to examine complex phonemes, which appear in Korean phonological system during 15th-21st cent., and the means of their graphic representation in order to determine the logical relationships between graphic and phonetic inventory of the language and distinguish the general trends of Korean writing system development during 15th-21st cent.

While studying the graphic inventory the correlation between phoneme and grapheme is considered to be rational if it keeps the following principle: 1 phoneme must be represented by 1 monograph. Other cases are considered to be an established tradition. The results of the
study show, when it comes to the reproduction of the complex phonemes, Korean writing system is mostly traditional, as far as it contains a number of complex graphemes and uses different graphemes with the same meaning in the closed and unclosed syllables etc.
