Abstract

JOY is considered to be one of the basic human emotions and key concepts in culture. The article deals with the comparative analysis of the means of verbalization and the structure of the conceptosphere JOY in the Ukrainian and English languages and cultures. The focus is made on the semantic peculiarities and specifi c features of the functioning of the lexeme JOY in the Ukrainian and English languages. The research of the conceptosphere JOY has been conducted by applying the method of cognitive defi nition suggested by Jerzy Bartmiński, which involves the analysis of its means of verbalization in the Ukrainian and English worldviews. By analysing the systematic data material of the Ukrainian and English languages drawn from etymological, explanatory, phraseological dictionaries and thesaurі as well as dictionaries of derivatives, synonyms, antonyms and paremias, the etymology of the word JOY is analyzed, its inner form is identifi ed, and the lexical means are marked out and compared in the two studied languages.
