ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION OF THE HISTORY OF UKRAINE IN THE STAGE PLAY «UKRAINIAN SCENES FROM 1649» BY M. KOSTOMAROV

The article investigates the features of artistic understanding of the events of national history in the stage play «Ukrainian scenes from 1649» by M. Kostomarov. The principles of formation of the personal and national freedom, their influence on the modeling of Ukrainian statehood are analyzed in the article. Using the documentary material the author describes the fateful epoch of the struggle of the Ukrainian people. The
author describes the main peculiarities of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi’s reign, faithfully reproduces the features of his political activity. The writer makes the accent on the idea of national identity and specify on the right to free development.
M. Kostomarov thinks that the basis of the national identity of the Ukrainian people is formed by the religion, their tolerance, the desire for freedom and the rejection of the state as a form of domination some people over others. The stage play is characterized by high certainty of events and figures, therefore this material later was added to the historical monograph «Bogdan Khmelnitsky». The playwright interprets historical facts under the ideological context of the work and reveals the worldview of the characters.
