Abstract

The article considers the process of efficient arrangement of students’ individual work with the purpose of improving their listening skills. Since independent work of the second-year university students comprises up to 43% of the whole learning load, special attention is placed on analyzing criteria for choosing audio and video materials for self-study. Regarding the fact that listening skills are the core skills for mastering a foreign language, the peculiarities of developing principle listening comprehension mechanisms have been presented in the article. They are: comprehension of the speech flow, prediction
of information, processing mechanisms, listening memory, logical processing of the message content, inner speaking. There have been outlined peculiar features of the assignments given for individual work taking into account peculiarities of listening comprehension mechanisms. Referring to the curriculum requirements for the second-year students the authors of the article have presented a meticulous analysis and description of such task areas for enhancing listening skills as preparation for the module tests, laboratory works and home watching. A special attention is drawn to the sample tasks skillfully selected in accordance with the requirements for the listening texts for the second-year university students. Finally, the authors mention a range of difficulties encountered by students while accomplishing individual listening assignments.
