THE PECULARITIES OF CONTEMPORARY METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH APPLICATION IN PRIMARY SCHOOL

Abstract

The article reflects modern methods of teaching English in primary school such as project, drama, play/games, Total Physical Response. Psychological and physiological characteristics of young learners were analyzed. It was defined that young learners have short attention span, concentration; they enjoy learning mainly through play; they like imitating and mimicking what they have heard; they understand situations more easily than language; they experience the physical world as dominant; they learn indirectly rather than directly; young learners understand mostly when they see, hear, touch and interact rather than from explanations; they are imaginative but at times may have some difficulties distinguishing between imagination and the real world; they are too sensitive to labeling and assessment; have lack of L2 knowledge and persistent use L1 in class; young learners are too active and often undisciplined; they want to use language, not to study it in its own right; they respond although they do not understand; abstract concepts are difficult to deal with. All these features of junior pupils must be taken into account, so that it is expedient, didactically reasonable to choose methods of teaching English in primary school. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods were analyzed, the peculiarities of their application in the educational process are highlighted.
