Abstract

The article deals with semantics of legal terms-abbreviations which function in economic texts. The work presents different definitions and interpretations of acronyms presented by prominent scientists in their linguistic works. The article discusses approaches to acronyms definitions in the works of V.Leichyk, O.Zemska, V.Horpynych and others. In particular, they consider abbreviation as the way of nomination formations for particular concepts with the help of attributive word collocations, or as a derivation which makes words shorter. In our work we consider abbreviation as artificial acronymic words. Whereas an abbreviation may be any type of shortened form, such as words with the middle omitted, an acronym is a word formed from the first letter or first few letters of each word in a phrase. Furthermore, the research analyses main types of the mostly used legal terms-abbreviations as well as acronyms in economic texts. The author draws the conclusion and states that the semantics of the legal abbreviations remains the same in economic literature of different genres. The work also presents the facts that economic terms in the English-language factual material on economy appeared to be legal homonyms as a result of the process of using them in other spheres, as well as legal terms. This mainly concerns those spheres of economic communication, those sociological groups that are directly involved in legal practice at enterprises, in various business firms, in offices related to economic activity.
