Abstract

The study of the peculiarities of technical and science texts, including the texts of patents, is the basis of the prior scope in the university education of future professionals in the field of specialty translation. The proposed article considers the general linguistic characteristics of the texts of scientific discourse, which include French and Canadian patents. The patent for an invention is a technical document having its particularities of translation related to the characteristics which are typical for the texts of the scientific discourse. Consequently, special attention should be given to precision and brevity of the information presented, the laconic style of the speech, proper use of the specialized terms becoming especially important in the course of dealing with the specifications, lists and indexes of the attachments, diagrams, drawings as special types of technical documents. The theoretical research is based on the works of different scientists on the structural particularities and the general linguistic characteristics of the French written texts. The subject of the analysis covers all the linguistic categories, forms and relevant constructions of patents. These are the characteristic means for the written form of scientific communication such as: the correct logical articulation, the semantic precision and condensation, the impersonality of the author, the accuracy and coherence, the absence of subjectivity and good textual construction.
