Abstract

The article deals with V. Drozd narrative “Yriy” translation peculiarities into Russian language and determines the original’s literary interpretation differences, due to the language of translation specificity, national color. The non-linguistic context – i.e., when and where the narrative was written, history of its publication, author’s communicative intention, etc. were also taken into account. The article analyzes the narrative “Yriy” translated by N. Vysotska, noting that the translator worked with the complete “Yriy” text which was included in 1989 two-volume edition of writer’s works. Consideration is also given to the redacted “Yriy” text (1974), which somehow differs in composition and content from the complete text. The author proves that in general the translator has achieved adequacy, for the Russian text is equivalent to the source. The point at issue is the translation within one cultural area, where cognate Indo-European languages dominate. The article states that N. Vysotska managed to recreate and convey the very ironic view of life, which marked the “Yriy” text, where the author used such stylistic devices as phantasy, chimera, hyperbolism and fable, etc. As it was discovered, “Yriy” translation has its own specific character, considerable differences in translating strategy, etc. The article points that Russian text of the narrative contains certain transformations of equivalent translation units. Often used Ukrainian words and word combinations in N. Vysotska’s text are equivalent to expressively colored lexical components, characteristic to the Russian language.
