Abstract

The article outlines peculiarities of teaching reading the authentic texts at the English lesson at secondary school. Taking into account the requirements of the current Program for secondary schools with in-depth study of foreign languages, the purpose of studying reading at the secondary level is to form a sufficient communicative competence in reading. This provides the ability to read and understand simple, authentic texts of different nature and type.
Reading is defined as a goal and means of teaching English. The content of reading instruction is the ability to understand the information of the text using linguistic, contextual prognostic skills. Reading the text, students should understand the main content and important details, that is, to acquire extensive and intensive reading skills. Extensive reading gives the general idea of the text, supplies new information and produces the eathetic impact on the reader. Intensive reading implies the understanding of all lexical units and grammar constructions. Techniques utilized at working with texts depend on the phase of training and goals at the lesson. Psycholinguistic characteristics of teaching reading are discussed. Efficiency of the pupils work at the lesson depends on how correct they define the type of reading they should apply for fulfilling the task. The stages at the lesson that teaches reading are described. The system of exercises that are suggested for teaching reading is analysed.
