“ENGLISH FOR UNDERGRADUATES (4TH YEAR)”: THE CONCEPTION OF THE TEXTBOOK AS A COMPOSITE PART OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE FORMATION

The article deals with the concept and content of the author’s textbook «English for Undergraduates (4th year)», which was published in 2019, as well as the peculiarities of its application for the formation of English-speaking communicative competence of students of language and literature departments.
The textbook is intended for the methodological base of the discipline «Basic Foreign Language», which is studied by students of the 4th year of the educational level «Bachelor» in the specialties «Philology. Germanic languages and literature (translation included)» and «Secondary education. Language and Literature (English)» The purpose of the textbook is to form the English-speaking communicative competence through the development of oral and written speech skills.
The textbook comprises 7 basic and 2 supplementary sections. The subject area of the textbook corresponds to the curriculum of this course for universities. In each major section there are authentic English texts and the system of author’s practical tasks provided to them, which helps students to interpret the social, political, cultural and educational realities in the process of communication, and to develop the culture of communication in English at the level sufficient for the implementation of communicative acts in the educational environment as well as beyond it; the formation of tolerance, respect for the customs and traditions of other peoples. Supplementary sections include thematic articles from the English press, the plan for their analyses, cliches and special vocabulary for their further analysis, as well as three categories of generalized grammar tests.
