SYNONYMIC CORRELATIONS IN ENGLISH MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY

Abstract

The article highlights the problems of synonymy functioning in English medical system of terminology. It gives the analysis of synonymic pairs and rows of English medical terms, the reasons of terminological synonymy increase in the sphere of clinical medicine are described, that prevent an adequate apprehension of scientific information. Such factors as an appropriate usage and expedience are taken into account while selecting definite synonyms out of an existing synonymic row. Synonymic pairs with proper component can relatively be subdivided into doublets, equivalents and variants. The background for the rise of parallel forms are analyzed, stipulated by some intra- and extralinguistic factors among which are science development, borrowings, problems with standardization of the clinical terminology.
