Keywords:
term, terminology, history of terminology, Eugen WüsterAbstract
The article presents the results of a theoretical study aimed at describing the chronological order of the development of terminology as a separate branch of linguistics. The prerequisites for the emergence of terminology as a form of science were analyzed from the time when the terms and principles of the terminology were not harmonized, key figures and their contribution to term studies development were mentioned, in particular Eugen Wüster, who is considered to be the founder of the scientific principles of term formation and terminology as a science. The author put an emphasis on the periods when changes in the terminological activities have occurred, describing what key changes were made during the transition from the structural paradigm to the anthropocentric one, and how those changes affected the positioning of the object of terminological studies, the perception of the term as an object of terminological and lexicographic research, change and development of methods of research of terminological units. The article presents a clear sequence of changes that the science of terminology has undergone since its establishment as a separate field of lexicology, enabling the use of article materials as a basis for theoretical and practical research in terminology, terminography and lexicography.
