Abstract

The article substantiates the importance of using the method of discussion in teaching foreign language in high school, highlights the characteristic features of the discussion method, and identifies the main stages of the discussion, as well as recommendations to teachers for its conduct in the classroom. It is determined that the discussion is one of the important methods of learning – it is an independent method of interactive learning, which is represented by many modifications, different ways of organizing the discussion process. The article confirms that the method of discussion belongs to the category of complex methods, and its productivity depends on the degree of students’ activity, which must be skillfully “unleashed” and unobtrusively directed. The method of discussion as one of the methods of problem learning is increasingly used in foreign language classes, including professionally-oriented learning, mainly because it allows to seamlessly integrate the knowledge of students from different areas in solving a problem, makes it possible to apply language knowledge and skills in practice, generating new ideas. In order that the discussion does not become unmanageable in the conversation, the teacher needs to take the following actions: familiarize students with the principles of discussion; define the range of discussion; create alternative groups or groups; conclude each statement with specific proposals/conclusions.
