FORMING FOREIGN LANGUAGE COMPETENCE IN READING OF STUDENTS OF HIGHER EDUCATIONAL ESTABLISHMENTS

Abstract

The article deals with the problem of forming foreign language competence in reading of students of higher educational establishments. The article is based on the provisions of the Common European Recommendations on Language Education, which discusses recommended levels of foreign language proficiency, foreign language learning competences, language learning and teaching processes, assignments and their role in language learning. The article distinguishes the concepts of speech and language competence, identifies the main components of communicative competence, and examines the types of speech activity. Much attention is paid to the features of reading as a kind of speech activity. The article discusses the main stages and goals of forming a foreign language communicative competence in reading, outlines the main purpose of each stage, clearly specifying the knowledge and skills that a student must acquire at each stage of forming a foreign language communicative competence in reading. The article also draws attention to exercises that are appropriate to use at a certain stage, analyzing modern English textbooks for high school students. In the article the author provides examples of different types of exercises for the formation of foreign language communicative competence in reading. The author also considers the role of home-reading and its importance in forming foreign language learning competence in reading.
