Abstract

The article deals with the problem of speech expressiveness on the syntactical level of the English-language short story. The purpose of the research is to discover and analyse syntactical constructions that have expressive potential and pragmatic orientation. The paper examines different scientific approaches to the study of syntactical stylistic devices. The work also presents the results of the analysis devoted to stylistic devices functioning in the English-language short story. This analysis made it possible to identify the most widespread stylistic devices, among which there are parallelism, anaphora, epiphora, chiasmus and rhetorical question. It is proved that the English-language short story is characterised by the prevalence of neutral style, however it does not mean that this type of text lacks expressiveness. Each of the above-mentioned stylistic devices used in the English-language short story fosters expressiveness of the whole fiction text and has pragmatic potential with the help of which the recipient is influenced in a particular way. Despite this, it is essential to emphasize that the English-language short story is a complex coherent system and all its components closely interact and complement each other. Therefore, interaction of various stylistic devices within the text promotes greater speech expressiveness and pragmatic effect on the addressee.
