PECULIARITIES OF IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CATEGORY OF QUALITY BY MEANS OF ADVERBS WITH THE SUFFIX -LY

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of structural-syntactic, semantic and stylistic features of qualitative adverbs with the suffix -ly, which express the category of quality in a literary text, from the point of cognitive linguistics. The main syntactic models and their speech implementation variants have been established, the peculiarities of the language implementation of the quality category have been determined with the help of adverbs under analysis on the example of a literary text as well as their stylistic shades of meaning.
Numerous examples confirm the fact that adverbs are characterized by considerable semantic and stylistic flexibility, active functioning and their ability to enrich expressive means of the language. Performing their own semantic and stylistic functions in the speech process, they develop certain qualities of other words, verbs in particular, introducing new shades of meaning, emphasizing their functional capabilities.
As a result of the conducted research, objective data have been obtained regarding the peculiarities of the implementation of the language category of quality by using adverbs with the suffix -ly, taking into account the dichotomy «language-speech», which made it possible to learn and analyze the systemic and specific-individual characteristics of the use of the studied units. Models have been established that represent the peculiarities of the implementation of the studied category and the prospects for the further research of the functional potential of qualitative adverbs have been outlined.
The central model for all studied adverbs was the V+Adv model which carries a significant communicative meaning in relation to the marked verb. Semantic groups of verbs have been distinguished, the most numerous are considered to be verbs of speech (68%) and verbs of movement (32%).
