SOME NOTES ON THE HISTORY OF THE COMPILATION OF DICTIONARIES OF VETERINARY TERMINOLOGY

Abstract

The article analyzes veterinary terminology over the past 200 years, creates a phasing of the development of Ukrainian professional lexicography based on a historical-political principle, each of which is illustrated by achievements in the field of veterinary lexicology. Attention is focused on figures who contributed to the emergence and functioning of veterinary medicine in Ukraine, and their work is considered as a source of veterinary terminology. It has been suggested that the birth of veterinary science on Ukrainian territory can be considered the year 1784, when the Department of Infectious Diseases of Animals was created at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lviv, and Yury Khmel was invited to head it, whose scientific studies were based on the study of diseases that were rampant at that time in Galicia. Emphasis is placed on the fact that without representatives of scientific schools, who were also university teachers, their scientific works, which became the basis of terminology, there would be no national terminology in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century. The titanic efforts of All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in this field are noted and a list of dictionaries of professional terminology published at that time is provided. The process of linguicide and its consequences for Ukrainian lexicography for many decades are analyzed in detail. The glossaries published in the Soviet period and after the restoration of Ukraine's independence are characterized. Areas of veterinary vocabulary creation that need to be refined on the way to creating a modern comprehensive glossary of veterinary terminology are outlined.
