Abstract

The article deals with the problem of the analyzes of complimentary statements as the existence of speech etiquette in the linguistic aspect. It was noted that positive politeness had the aim at creating a positive image of the addressee. Negative politeness is intended to respect the person’s right to living space and independence. It meant non-interference in the sphere of his/her personally meaningful space.
The article proves that a compliment is a script of speech etiquette, but there is a certain risk that the addressee who utters the compliment may be a misunderstood addressee. A sincere compliment can be interpreted as flattery one, especially in light of the fact that actually flattery is as close as it is possible to a compliment.
Marking compliments is quite uncomfortable thing, because this matter may be seemed too complicated, insincere, ironic, or may be perceived as frank flattery, sycophancy, evasiveness, as the attempt to gain trust or gain recognition. Compliments should be made carefully, taking into account the role status of the addressee, his/her individual and psychological characteristics, and the nature of the relationships. Frankly exaggerated exaggeration of positive qualities may indicate that the addressee belongs to the type of people who do not feel the inadequacy and inappropriateness of their statements, or indicates the presence of hidden selfish goals.
We showed that according to the rules of speech etiquette, it was considered adequate and appropriate to “raise” the image of the communicator by giving him/her a compliment. Labeling is a manifestation of interest of the communicator, recognition of his/her advantages and condescension to shortcomings.
