METHODS OF NON-FORMAL AND INFORMAL LEARNING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION

Abstract

The article deals with non-formal and informal learning as alternative types of education that enhance formal education and the quality of professional training. The authors examine modern methods of non-formal and informal foreign language teaching that can be successfully integrated into the formalized educational process. The content of the concepts is specified, the key features of all types of learning are determined, the effectiveness of learning a foreign language in non-formal and informal contexts is explained. The expediency of using non-formal and informal learning methods in foreign language education is analyzed. Active and interactive methods such as brainstorming, discussion, game, project and problem-based methods, cooperative learning models and technologies, storytelling, dramatization engage students in communicative activities, experiential acquisition of knowledge and skills, and are proved to be more effective than traditional ones. The authors describe the experience of using storytelling and dramatization, which expand the vocabulary repertoire, enable rapid assimilation of language structures, behavioral patterns, correct pronunciation and intonation. The modern methods of shadowing and buddying, which are common in non-formal and informal learning, are also studied. The Shadowing method lies in listening and repeating the text simultaneously with a native speaker. The Budding method involves partnership interaction, when one party shares knowledge with the other party. A wide range of methods, technologies and forms of organizing non-formal and informal learning has a powerful educational potential and diversifies formal education. The authors emphasize the need for closer integration of all types of education, development of transparent validation mechanisms adapted to different specialties.
