LANGUAGE TRAINING USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: PROS AND CONS

Abstract

The following article examines the peculiarities of the use of artificial intelligence-based developments for high-quality foreign language training. Researchers have different approaches to the definition of “artificial intelligence”, and also distinguish its different types, for example: weak and strong. In addition, it’s possible to distinguish at least five ways of using the achievements of the development of AI in the educational process: 1) the use of multimedia learning technologies; 2) additional intelligence; 3) elements of gamification; 4) easy integration and 5) chat-bots. The role of artificial intelligence in education is significant, as a result, it promotes effective independent learning. Learners can receive individual tasks that allow them to develop their speaking skills and understanding of a foreign language and its variants. AI-based developments allow analysis of students’ errors and provide recommendations. At the same time, there are different points of view of scientists regarding integrity in the use of AI. The vast majority of researchers are inclined to think that it is appropriate to use the developments and ideas of artificial intelligence as examples for analysis or training tasks for educational purposes. However, passing off mechanical work as one’s creativity is considered a violation of the students’ code of integrity.
