Abstract

The present study is devoted to the analysis of the writing conference method of teaching students academic English writing. The purpose of the study is to analyze the use of the writing conference method with a view to defining the possibility of its application in Ukrainian universities. The relevance of the research topic is stipulated by the need to apply the best practices, methods and techniques used by foreign teachers of English as a foreign language in teaching English, in particular academic writing, in universities. The study uses general scientific methods, namely the descriptive method, analysis, synthesis, and generalization. The research results. A writing conference is a face-to-face conversation between a lecturer and a student regarding the process of creating a written paper. Writing conferences are divided by purpose into training, drafting, revision, and editing. By orientation, writing conferences are classified as teacher-centered and student-centered. According to the main focus, writing conferences can be focused on the student’s training and on the written assignment. Writing conferences can take place in the format of lecturer-student or lecturer-students. The effectiveness of a writing conference is influenced by its structuring and the involvement of the student in the process of defining the agenda. Writing conferences have a predetermined structure. In conferences, lecturers and students have predictable roles. The prospect of further research is to analyze the application of writing conferences in the educational process in Ukrainian universities, in particular for master’s students.
