REFERENCE AS A BASIS FOR COREFERENCE

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the fundamental relationship between reference and coreference. The aim of this work is to reveal the mechanisms by which reference serves as a basis for the formation of coreferential relations in various texts. The methodology of the study is based on a comprehensive analysis of the works of leading linguists and the analysis of various examples. The materials used for the article are the book “The Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Rome”, the article “Oriental Elements of Greek Religion in ‘The Orientalising Period’: Focus on the Apollo Cult” and the thesis “Artemis and her cult”. The results of the work demonstrate that the basis of coreference is the phenomenon of reference identity, which in turn is a specific case of reference, confirming the statement that coreference is connected to reference. The article also defines such terms as “referent”, “referential expression”, “anaphora”, “cataphora”, “functional equivalence”. The conclusions drawn in the article are important for further study of the phenomena of correspondence and reference in various fields.
