ON THE ISSUE OF THE BORROWING-LOANWORD PHENOMENON DEFINITION IN MODERN UKRAINIAN LINGUISTICS

Abstract

The article deals with the problem of the borrowing-loanword phenomenon analysis regarding the absence of corresponding terms denoting two separate aspects of the phenomenon in modern Ukrainian linguistics. The study was conducted in order to present a comprehensive characteristics of both of the phenomenon’s aspects, as well as stress the above mentioned terminological issue existing within Ukrainian linguistic discourse. In order to research the topic of the borrowing-loanword phenomenon, a number of Ukrainian (Hudyma, Koloiz, Oliinyk, Pavlenko, Selivanova, Kaminska, Karaban, Boris, Ilchenko) and foreign (Haugen) researchers’ works have been thoroughly examined. 
This article contains relevant, organised data regarding the borrowing-loanword phenomenon. In addition, relevancy and appropriateness of the definitions provided in the examined works of the mentioned above linguists is being discussed in this paper. Additionally, alternative terms denoting two separate aspects of the borrowing-loanword phenomenon are provided. Lastly, the difference between the cause and origin, a unit and process have been discussed in order to provide reasoning necessary to comprehensively deliver our point of view, as well as contribute to the understanding of the borrowing-loanword phenomenon regarding its blurred status in Ukrainian linguistic discourse.
Further study of the reference material has shown a continuous one-sided coverage of the borrowing-loanword phenomenon when giving its definition. However, not having mentioned the definition of another aspect they would still cover its characteristics. The issue discussed in the last paragraph has been found in most of the reference materials covering the borrowing-loanword phenomenon that were examined.
