Lesya Ukrainka's works depict important issues of that time: drunkenness of men, as a result of which entire families suffered (the story "Such is Her Fate"); the illness of a young man who could no longer work; the constant work of a woman who was engaged in sewing for a low wages (the story "Holy Evening!").
In the works of Natalia Kobrinskaya a naturalistic reproduction of the consequences of war can be traced (the tale "Brothers"). People were forced to leave their homes because of danger, had no hope of returning home and no hope for the future. In the story "Spirit of the Time" we observe the unfortunate fate of a mother who cannot provide the future of her children in the revolutionary time from which she suffers a lot.
In the works of Olga Kobilyanskaya we see the most cruel act in the circle of one family – the murder of an older brother by a younger one (the story “Earth”) and the heavy burden that the parents of the murdered young man experience and are forced to overcome.
