Abstract

The article describes the technique of studying the concept of “stork” in Ukrainian as a foreign language (UFL) classes. The relevance of the study is determined by the need for applied research on ornithological concepts in the field of linguodidactics, in particular in the aspect of teaching UFL.
The article focuses on the concept of “stork” because, as the analysis of a number of linguistic studies shows, it has great sociocultural potential. In Ukrainian culture, this concept is associated with such concepts as home, family, motherhood, and the birth of a child, which are very valuable to a person. In addition, the image of a stork evokes positive or neutral reactions in recipients. These characteristics of the concept are taken into account as important in the process of preparing educational materials for speakers of other cultures.
It has been found that it is recommended to start familiarizing foreigners with information about representatives of wild fauna at the intermediate level of the first degree (B1). A model for studying the concept of “stork” is developed and described. It includes texts of different styles about the stork intended for reading; tasks aimed at understanding the content of these textual materials, and exercises for the development of communicative competence.
In addition, the song “Lelechenky” (lyrics by Dmytro Pavlychko, music by Oleksandr Bilash) performed by People’s Artist of Ukraine Nina Matvienko is offered to improve listening skills. Attention is focused on problematic fragments of the song’s text that may raise questions for foreign speakers. The tasks that will help to avoid misunderstanding the content are presented.
It is concluded that the study of the proposed teaching materials will broaden foreigners’ understanding about wildlife, contribute to the deepening of background knowledge about the culture of the country whose language they are learning, and develop sociocultural and communicative competencies.
