The main purpose of this article is to analyze the lexical approach in teaching speaking to students at higher levels B2-C1 and to develop exercises that can be used to teach oral speech and improve the communicative competence of students at higher levels. Effective language proficiency depends not only on knowledge of grammar but also on the usage of various lexical units, for example, phraseological units, synonyms, antonyms, idioms, and stable word combinations or collocations (Lindstromberg & Boers, 2008). The lexical approach enables students to learn lexical units in context more quickly and apply them in real language situations. In the article, we briefly present information about domestic and foreign scientists who have studied or analyzed this approach in their research, emphasizing its effectiveness. We present developed lexical exercises that contribute to the development of speaking competence, as well as some interactive teaching methods, for example, role-playing discussions and debates. Special emphasis is placed on the need to use authentic materials and contextual learning, which ensures the naturalness of speech. Thus, the lexical approach is key in the development of students' speaking skills (level B2-C1). The use of the lexical approach in teaching speaking improves the effective formation of communicative competence and confidence in using a foreign language.
