Abstract

The article emphasizes the topicality of onomastic research, presents a review of main aspects of toponymic studies. A number of classifications of toponyms have been analysed. Toponymic layer of vocabulary can be studied diachronically, synchronically or by means of their combination. Cognitive, typological and lexicographical stand out as chief approaches in toponymic studies.
