Abstract

The article deals with the text title as one of the most essential and basic elements of the text composition. The peculiarities and the main functions of the text titles in the Ancient Greek and Roman literature are being defined and the classification of the text titles is being carried out according to the structural-semantic and etymological criteria. The article dwells upon the use of stylistically marked word, which can be classified as neologisms and pejoratives, in the text titles in the Ancient Greek and Roman literature. The results of the research can serve as the theoretical and practical bases for further study of the poetics of the text titles in the Ancient Greek and Roman literature. Lexical and grammatical peculiarities of text titles in Ancient Greek and Roman literature are not limited by this investigation and every defined single peculiarity can be a subject of a more profound study.
