English ophthalmological terms in the focus of Corpus Linguistics

The article deals with the peculiarities of English ophthalmological terms. The terms have been analyzed on the basis of lexicographic sources and authentic publications related to the field of ophthalmology. The terms have been classified according to their structure and etymology, the authors have also proposed thematic classification of the ophthalmological terms. The authors conclude that the majority of English ophthalmological terms originate from Greek or Latin, the terms of the studied field can be structurally classified into simple, combined and compound terms and each of them may belong to one of 10 thematic groups. With
a view of consideration of the specificity of contextual functioning of the terms the corpus approach has been applied. Analysis of the English ophthalmological terms has been carried out by means of AntConc software and British National Corpus (BNC). In order to realize the main aim of the research eight articles devoted to such topics as eye abnormalities, eye diseases and physiological peculiarities have been scrutinized. The results obtained during the research are illustrated with the examples from the studied sources.
